Exercise 2.3 Perspective Distortion and the Low Angle
The photograph is taken with 20mm focal length from below the subject. The setting was chosen to include the lines of the picnic bench, with a forward resting hand as part of the pose to demonstrate how the perspective distortion of a short focal length is enhanced by an using a low angle of view and tipping the camera slightly to look up towards the subject.
The distortion within the image can be seen in the shoes and the front hand which are bulging forward looking bigger than in natural human perspective. There is a sense that the upper body is further back from the knees of the subject than might generally be expected in standard body ratios. The picnic bench also looks to extend further from the foreground to the mid range of the image than might be expected of a standard sized picnic bench. This is generally not a suitable angle of view or choice of focal length for a portrait.
